Event overview
Medbh’s exhibition entitled 'Endurance Drawings' will run from Saturday 21st Oct until the to 3rd of November
Irish Artist Medbh Gillard was born in County Galway in 1969, she has lived and worked in County Sligo since 2003. Her work is largely drawing based and she produced a series of charcoal portraits of Arctic and Antarctic explorers for exhibition at the Jerome Conor Sculpture Centre in County Kerry during the International Tom Crean Festival in 2016. This first phase of an ongoing body of work includes portraits of the crew of The Endurance for the centenary of the Imperial Transantarctic Expedition under the command of Sir Ernest Shackleton. The Endurance Drawings is a thought-provoking series depicting all 29 individuals who were part of that expedition. The artist used archive photographs as reference material. Although some of the crew had their contributions publicly recognised, delivered lectures and published books about their experiences, others were killed during WWI or faded into relative obscurity. This collection represents a subtle act of repatriation and remembrance.
